While the D-35 is like the cooler, older, more sophisticated, brother of the D-28; but the HD-35 is like the oldest of the brothers that at some point has taken the others under his wing and shown them all the tricks. He's like the Fonz of the family and the others are younger Fonzie's in training. There's no doubt that Martin dreadnaughts sound amazing and they get better with age. The HD-35 has the sound of being played in for years, but when it's brand new. It's got a thundering low end that you can really dig into with a flatpick and not worry about running out of headroom. Start fingerpicking and quickly forget that you're hearing a dreadnaught. What about the herringbone binding? Well now, you've noticed what of the awesome little Martin nuances. So herringbone binding is little pieces of maple glued together in a herringbone pattern. What does that do for the guitar? Well it means that there is less plastic binding on the guitar. Over time plastic binding shrinks. Well since there herringbone binding is made of wood and wood doesn't shrink. All this means a more solid construction allowing the top to move freer and be louder and add to that great tone of the guitar. Oh and there's more, scalloped bracing, also letting the top be freer without taking away from the structural strength of the guitar and helping with that broken in sound right off the bat. Yup, oh yeah and don't forget that 3-piece Indian Rosewood back and bound fingerboard, but you already knew that.
